Soft Shoulder Sign
The Soft Shoulder sign works as a warning sign for a soft shoulder condition. Most of the time, the shoulder running along the side of the travel lane is made of gravel, dirt, or both. Such a condition is not suitable for driving and may not withstand a heavy vehicle. When moving onto a soft shoulder you should always be aware of the risk of losing traction and skidding. You should only use a soft shoulder if there is an immediate emergency.
If you need to use a soft shoulder for an emergency stop, try to reduce the speed while you are on the travel lane and move onto the soft shoulder at a speed as low as possible. Hold your steering wheel tightly and use brakes only if necessary. Remember to turn on emergency flashers while you stop on a shoulder.
When you move back onto the paved portion of the roadway, wait until there is not so much traffic on the road. Make signals and steer back onto the road slowly. It is not until you move back to the roadway can you speed up.
